I couldn’t get enough of this book, wanting desperately to reach the end and to find out what happens but at the same time wanting it to go on and on – such wonderful characters and the landscape evoked brilliantly though the voice of the protagonist, Willo. The world Sophie Crocket conjures up is set in a not-too-distant future which is frighteningly plausible. Every aspect of it feels entirely possible – the British Isles left a cold island in the north Atlantic after the failure of the warming currents from the south. The breakdown of society not dissimilar to what we have witnessed in other parts of the world following war, revolution or disaster. And in the cold landscape, Willo, a boy left alone on the Welsh mountains, searching for his family, finding other people good and bad along the way. Willo tells the story in his own way, in a strong voice determined to be heard, even as he’s thrown from event to event. The book is published by Macmillan Children’s Books, but I don’t think I’d want my sons (11 and 9) to read it yet. It has some harsh moments and at those points the language is suitably raw, so I’d say this is for young adults and older. For fans of great speculative fiction this is a must read – whatever your age.
